earthquakes in Japan & Christchurch, floods in northern & southern Australia……
It feels like a natural disaster is happening every fortnight at the moment – adding to the ongoing disasters and wars in Africa, Haiti, Afghanistan, Libya…… Sometimes it all seems overwhelming and I feel so helpless in the face of so much suffering – of people and animals – and I despair of the damage we are doing to our environment.
We make regular donations to charities such as Medecins Sans Frontiers for their non-political medical assistance to people in dire need, Amnesty International because we feel that they actively deal with injustice and provide a voice for the powerless, Greenpeace because if we don’t actively care for our natural environment and take responsibility for it then the quality of life on this planet will rapidly decline and also WSPA an animal welfare charity as so often animals are often the innocent victims of human actions. There are many organisations doing amazing work that makes a big difference and they need our support.
We also try to teach our kids to realise how fortunate they are, to respect others and to take responsibility for their actions and choices. I have started writing more letters/emails to governments and organisations – even though I often feel that I am so insignificant in the face of it all. But I have to do something – take some responsibility.
If nothing else, maybe these events will make more of us think more about what we as individuals can do to make a difference in the world.
